Objectives: Review FGDC standards endorsed 5 years or more, according to FGDC standards directive #9. Review standards in development and decide to advance development in 2006 or discontinue Action needed: Review 17 current FGDC endorsed standards to determine 4 options: Reissue the current standard (reconfirm with no changes) Revise the current standard (recommend minor editorial and general changes) Change the current standard (recommend major or technical changes) Withdraw the current standard (justification: lack of need, superceded, replaced, outdated, etc) Review standards in development to decide to advance development in 2006 discontinue Overall Approach: Use a phased approach. Focus on the oldest endorsed standards (13 established before 2000) first. 2nd Quarter – 1 standard endorsed by FGDC 1996 (pilot the process guidance review) 3rd Quarter – 2 standards endorsed by FGDC 1997 (pilot the process guidance review) 3rd Quarter – 7 standards endorsed by FGDC 1998 – 1999 4th Quarter – 7 standards endorsed by FGDC 2000 – 2001 Stage 1: Planning and Preparation Outline process and determine schedule Brief and discuss with Standards Working Group (SWG) Draft first level of Review Guidance Open for comment and revisions with SWG Inform FGDC staff, Coordination Group, Sub-Committee and Working Group chairs Stage 2: Mobilization and Implementation Focus on the oldest endorsed standards first – start with a manageable number in each quarter 17 standards need review this year; 4 are current Contact Sub-Committee and Working Group chairs – notifying them of schedule, suggested timeframe for review Conduct interviews and assist in setting timeframe for review and recommendations Check status of proposals and drafts of other standards not yet endorsed.
