* * Rostral Cord (C2), Nissl Stain. (Image modified from N.B. Everett, Functional Neuroanatomy. Lea Febiger 1971, with permission of Williams Wilkins). Look closely at the gray matter and find the following sensory nuclear groups in the posterior gray: posteromarginal nucleus, substantia gelatinosa, nucleus proprius, base of posterior horn. Now find the intermediate nuclear group between the posterior and anterior gray. The motor nuclei are in the anterior gray, and can be divided into medial and lateral subdivisions. In this section the accessory (spinal accessory) nucleus appears laterally. Axons from cells in this motor nucleus form the accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI) which innervates the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles. * Rostral Cord (C?), Weil Stain. (Image modified from N.B. Everett, Functional Neuroanatomy. Lea Febiger, 1971, with permission of Williams Wilkins). Imagine that these sections are in the prone position and that you are looking up (rostrally) the CNS; thus dorsal (posterior, the back of the person) is at the top of section and the left side (of the person) is to your left. Maintain this orientation as you progress through the cord and brainstem sections. Identify in the white columns (funiculi) the prominent tracts such as the gracile and cuneate fasciculi (tactile discrimination, proprioception and vibration), the posterolateral fasciculus (pain and temperature), the anterior white commissure (pain and temperature), the anterolateral tract (pain and temperature), the lateral corticospinal tract (motor), and the spinocerebellar tracts (afferent to cerebellum). Each of these, and others, will be seen in more detail when we cover the different functional systems. * Rostral Cord (C2), Weil Stain. (Image modified from N.B. Everett, Functional Neuroanatomy.
