Unit 14 Learning Objectives To master reporting words in indirect speech To know and discuss educational reform in China To learn how to contradict To discuss advantages and disadvantages of different schooling modes To enrich college life To grasp new words and expressions Reporting words (I) Reporting verbs or expressions are used to report on what other authors have done: whether they have made claims, argued a case, established findings, drawn conclusions, etc. Note the differences in these verbs: your choice of word will reveal to your reader your attitude toward the status of the authors theories/research; it will also indicate whether or not you consider her/his claims to be substantiated. Said, told and asked are the most common verbs used in indirect speech. We use asked to report questions: e.g.: I asked Lynne what time the lesson started. We use told with an object. e.g.: Lynne told me she felt tired. !Note - Here me is the object. We usually use said without an object. e.g.: Lynne said she was going to teach online. If said is used with an object we must include to ; e.g: Lynne said to me that shed never been to China. !Note - We usually use told. e.g.: Lynne told me that shed never been to China. There are many other verbs we can use apart from said, told and asked. These include: Using them properly can make what you say much more interesting and informative. For example: He asked me to come to the party: Reporting words (II) When using reported speech, most students learn to use say and tell: John told me he was going to stay late at work.Peter said he wanted to visit his parents that weekend. These forms are perfectly correct for reporting what others have said. However, there are a number of other reporting verbs which can more accurately describe what someone has said.
