Appendix 5. Field of Education classification (Post 2000) (a component of the Australian Standard Classification of Education - ASCED) The Field of Education classification is the classification used to describe higher education courses, specialisations and units of study. The main purpose of the classification is to ensure courses, specialisations and units of study with the same or similar vocational emphasis are reliably classified to the same field of education. It is intended also to aid people who design data collections, respond to requests for data, and compile, verify and analyse data. As such, the classification may be viewed as a dictionary clarifying where particular courses, specialisations and units of study data should be categorised. It is important to note that this classification has been developed to be used nationally in all administrative and survey collections which incorporate data on education by field. Broad Field of Education: A two digit code representing a grouping of major fields of education. Narrow Field of Education: A four digit code (including the relevant broad field of education code) representing a group of minor fields of education. Detailed Field of Education: A six digit code (including the relevant broad and narrow field of education). A broad field of education is a grouping of narrow fields of education; a narrow field of education is a grouping of detailed fields of education. The classification uses the concept of vocational emphasis for coding courses and specialisations. Field of education groupings of courses and specialisations are on the basis of similarity of potential vocations rather than similarity of content. Units of study are coded on the basis of a likeness in terms of their subject matter. Other and Not elsewhere classified categories are included within narrow and detailed fields to enable classification of courses, specialisations and units of study which cannot be allocated to a specific category. 0
