Performance Objectives
Following completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
Explain how passive transport (osmosis and diffusion) serve to maintain the homeostasis of the cell
Generate hypotheses based on credible, accurate, and relevant sources of scientific information
Use appropriate laboratory apparatuses, technology, and techniques safely and accurately when conducting a scientific investigation
Use scientific instruments to record measurement data in appropriate metic units that reflect the precision and accurary of each particular instrument
Design a scientific investigation with appropriate methods of control to test a hypothesis (including independent and dependent variables), and evaluate the designs of sample investigations.
Organize and interpret the data from a controlled scientific investigation by using mathematics, graphs, models, and/or technology
Evaluate the results of a controlled scientific investigation in terms of whether they refute or verify the hypothesis
Evaluate a technological design or product on the basis of designated criteria (including cost, time, and materials)
Compare the processes of scientific investigation and technological design
Use appropriate safety procedures when conducting investigations
C. Lesson Plan
1. Concept Exploration (~5 min)
Begin by asking students why their fingers get pruney after being in a pool for so long. Ask why a balloon eventually becomes flat after a given period of time. Give students few minutes to formulate a hypothesis on why this happens. For a visual, put one drop of food coloring in a glass bowl of water, and ask why the color spreads out evenly.
Concept Introduction (~20 min)
Discuss Osmosis and diffusion, hyptonic and hypertonic solutions in relation to cells. Provide visuals, which can include a class activity where students act as water molecules, a row of desks with little space between the
