In 1620, the settlers(移民), or Pilgrims(朝圣者), they sailed to America on the May flower, seeking(寻求) a place where they could have freedom of worship(信仰自由). After a tempestuous(颠簸的) two-month voyage(航行) they landed(着陆) at in icy(寒冷的) November, what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. * During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation(饥饿) or epidemics(传染病). Those who survived(生存) began sowing(播种) in the first spring. All summer long they waited for the harvests(丰收) with great anxiety(不安), knowing that their lives and the future existence(生存) of the colony(殖民地) depended on(依赖) the coming harvest. * Finally the fields produced(产生) a yield(收益) rich beyond expectations(超出预料). And therefore(因此) it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord(上帝) be fixed(确定). Years later, President(总统) of the United States proclaimed(宣布) the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration(庆祝) of Thanksgiving Day has been observed(遵循) on that date until today. * Thanksgiving Day is a festival in Canada and the United States which is pioneered(创始) by the United States.Since 1941, the annual(每年的) Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November.People will leave in two days from this day, no matter how busy (except for some special positions)they are, they are sure to get together.
