Varian ICP-MSQuadrupole controller  System overview The quadrupole controller generates the RF and DC control signals for the quadrupole. The ratio between the signals and their magnitude are variable. These signals determine which mass passes through the quadrupole and the resolution of the isotopic peaks. Access to the quadrupole controller It is a chassis mounted module located under the RF enclosure. To remove the unit, slide it out from the front of the instrument. The two controller output cables are fixed to high vacuum feedthroughs located in the bottom of vacuum chamber #3. The feedthroughs are screwed to each pair of quadrupole rods via metal tabs. These screws must be released before removing the mass analyser assembly. Quadrupole connection – vacuum feedthroughs Inside vacuum chamber#3 Under vacuum chamber#3 Gold plated pins proved a reliable connection into the rear mounted sockets of the quadrupole controller. Disconnect these to remove the unit. Power supply The controller operates on 230VAC supplied by the instrument mains input module. The mains input module is located in the lower right rear of the instrument. The mains cable is hard wired into the mains input module. What is inside? One for the RF output transformer and the other for the switching supplies. Temperature has a significant impact on the controller operation. Fluctuating temperature will cause signal instability, most likely caused by drifting mass calibration. When troubleshooting always check that the fans are operational. Control PWB The control PWB is located in the front section of the unit. It is the interface to the instrument system control PWB. It generates HV DC signals for the drive signal.
