Laozi (Lao Tzu, Lao Tse, Laotze, Lao Zi) Late Spring and Autumn Period Daodejing (Tao Te Ching) Li Er(李耳) Bo Yang(伯阳) Li Dan (李聃) Elder Dan (老聃) Senior Lord (老君) Senior Lord Li (李老君) Senior Lord Taishang (太上老君 Tàishàng Lǎojūn) Taoist Lord Lao Zi (老子道君) Supreme Mysterious and Primordial Emperor (太上玄元皇帝) Tao/Dao Tao is undefinable, unlimited, and unnamable. “道可道,非常道; 名可名,非常名。” --《道德经》第一章 The Tao that can be spoken of is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name. Tenets of Philosophical Taoism Tao is the source of the universe and makes all the things in the universe. 有物混成,先天地生。寂兮寥兮,独立而不改,周行而不殆,可以为天地母。吾不知其名,强字之曰道,强为之名曰大。大曰逝,逝曰远,远曰反。 --《道德经》第二十五章 There was something nebulous yet complete, Born before Heaven and earth. Silent, empty, Self-suffering and unchanging, Revolving without cease and without fail, It acts as the mother of the world. I do not know its name, And address it as “Tao”. Attempting to give it a name, I shall call it “Great”. To be great is to pass on. To pass on is to go further and further away. To go further and further away is to return.
