Well, before my trip to Shanghai I met with Professor Kleinman over in his office on the undergraduate campus, and he encouraged me to spend my time there as an anthropologist, not a psychiatrist. So if we apply an anthropological lens to China, we can note some basic thematic differences that distinguish it from (very broadly) “the West.” A common feature of many traditional societies is the importance of familial orientation, group-centerdness, and interdependence, which place high value on group harmony in place of autonomy and individualism. In traditional chinese medicine, the notion of harmony or rhythm between physiology and society is central. Illness may actually be viewed as caused by a disturbance in a person’s relationship with his surroundings, primarily because the person loses his “quietness” (jing), which is fundamental to a harmonious life. Loss of jìng is seen as the source of destruction, and the recovery of jìng indicates the path to longevity. * Zang zao which one paper I read translated as “hasty organ” The symptoms of this illness, which apparently only afflicts women, are as follows: “she is easily saddened and cries often, is emotionally unstable as if influenced by an evil spirit, yawns and stretches her limbs frequently. Suddenly, the patient faints and loses consciousness, or becomes worrisome and sad, and bursts into temper without reason.” The etiology of zang zao, according to the Golden Box summary, is that: “This is due to disease of the reproductive organ, and not really related to devils and spirits.” The phrase ‘hasty organ,’ then, means that
