Introduction to Engineering and the Environment The answers to such questions are not always simple. Some environmental changes are beneficial in the short run, however these changes may have adverse consequences. Not all people agree on whether a particular environmental is cause for concern. Engineers are primarily involved in problems related to technology development and deployment, including designing, developing, and building the cars, television sets, and others consumer products that people enjoy. Engineers are also design and build all the manufacturing processes, industrial technology, and transportation infrastructure. Engineers are also involved in the study of how pollutants are transported and transformed in the Environment. Engineers are responsible for a wide range of activities that contribute to environmental change. Environmental change: (1) Changes associated with land use. (2) Changes induced by emissions or residues from products and industrial processes. When an old refrigerator or an old used cars died, they usually discarded. The laws have suddenly changed, now you must take back all of the discarded product and be responsible for its environmentally safe disposal. If you had known this in advance, would you have designed and built the product in the same way? The engineers need “solve problems” and they has a unique characteristic is that engineers “build things” and “make stuff” that serves society. Environmental concerns: (1) atmospheric emission, (2) water pollution, (3) solid waste, (4) natural resource depletion. If we step back and ask about the sources of these impacts as they related to engineers who design, analyze, and “build things”, three major categories emerge: (1) material selection, (2) manufacturing processes, and (3) energy use. Materials selection The material has to come from somewhere, and eventually it all tracks back
