nibs实践的感想【DOC精选】
Never Ending Story
By Gao Peng
My initial goal of joining in the summer program is to learn something on the C. elegans, a model system for developmental biology. The whole story at NIBS begins with the following words in my personal statement “C. elegans is the worm winning the Nobel Prize, but just as Dr. Rao’s saying, the research of the worm is absent in China.” Therefore, with great interests on the mysterious worm, I am lucky enough to join Wang’s group.
No doubt, I have learnt some background knowledge as well as some skills in Wang X. C.’s lab during the 40-day training. Besides, I had the opportunities to enjoy talks by Dr. Wang Xiaodong, Dr. Deng Xingwang and other PIs. But I enjoy our annual retreat more than the talks by our directors in fact.
More importantly, I am feeling the unambiguous blur has been cleared. I used to know little about any branch of biological sciences in detail—bioinformatics, genetics, biophysics, biochemistry were no more than something vague to me-- which led to a direct result that I was interested in almost every field, or, in other words, I did not understand where my interest indeed lies. But by the end of the training, I am determined to dedicate myself to genetics and developmental biology, which are really in vivo systems, though more time-consuming than those in vitro ones. Why is it like this? To answer biological questions, it is the question and the answer that matters other than techniques and strategies. I am not a reductionist and have believed since the very beginning that physics or chemistry can not tell the biological truth without a biological sense. Life is not simply some compound of carbon, hydrogen and other elements, nor of nuclear acids, proteins and lipids. Even the behavior in single cell is not enough when we focus on some biological processes. Life is life itself. What we see and deduce from our experiments may be totally different from what really happens in the living animal or plant. Thus, for each
