Optimal Capacitor Placements in Distribution Systems Abstract: A solution methodology based on an optimization technique to determine: The locations to install capacitors. The types and sizes of capacitors to be installed. The control settings of these capacitors at different load levels. Introduction: General Capacitor Placement Problem: The problem of how to place capacitors on the system such that these benefits are achieved and/or maximized against the cost associated with the capacitors placement. In this paper, it is presented a new formulation of the general capacitor placement problem by taking practical aspects of capacitors, the load constraints and operational constraints at different load levels into consideration. It extends the problem formulation in [19,20] (Optimal Capacitor Placement on Radial Distribution System, Optimal Sizing of Capacitor Placed on a Radial Distribution Systems),by further incorporating the following into the formulation: the cost associated with capacitor placement is considered to be a step-like function (rather than a continuously differentiable function since capacitors in practice are grouped in banks of standard discrete capacities) and the capacitor sizes and control setting are treated as discrete variables. And the current practice in the nonlinear programming formulation of the capacitor placement problem is to approximate the cost function by a differentiable function. It has adapted the simulated annealing technique to constrained optimization problem.
