Copyright The George Washington University 2000 Lecture 2: Introduction to PC SAS By Minje Sung, Ph.D. Objective Understand SAS environment Three main windows: LOG, PROGRAM EDITOR, OUT Two parts of SAS program: DATA, PROC Data manipulation: Read and write Run simple data analyses: t-test Overview SAS is A multi-platform software program The user interfaces can vary depending on the system: Windows, Unix, Mainframe But language and commands are identical SAS is neither menu driven nor command driven SAS is a programming language for data analyses SAS GUI(Graphical User Interface) in PC SAS Windows PROGRAM EDITOR contains the SAS programming statements and data LOG window shows compiled SAS program and the results of execution OUT window will become active when the output is produced by the program Executing a Program A program is typed in the PROGRAM EDITOR To submit (execute), either Click on the little runny guy icon Or, press ‘F8’ key Clearing Windows The windows accumulate contents To clear, either Select “Clear All” under “Edit” menu Or press “Ctrl”+”E” (hit “E” while holding down “Ctrl”) Saving the Work Select “File-Save” or “File-Save As”.. from the menu Any active window can be saved Carefully observe which window is active, thus being saved Rules of SAS Programs SAS statements can be in upper or lowercase Statements can continue on the next line Every SAS statement ends with a semicolon Lines of data are not ended by semicolons you can start statements anywhere within a line But it is good style to indent certain statements A SAS Program DATA step PROC step Reading Data Separated by Spaces Temporary SAS Data Sets All data sets created during a SAS session are temporary data sets. Will be deleted when you close SAS. Ex.
