Republican Party Republican Party founded in 1854, abolishing slavery as its original sole purpose Democratic Party: party of the south, plantation owners Republican Party: party of the north, favoring domestic industrial development, high tariffs on imported goods Fourth Party System(1894-1932) Republicans dominated the national government. Republican Party: a coalition of Western farmers, Midwestern reformers, Eastern financial and manufacturing interests Reformist agenda: government regulation of railroads and other industries By 1920s, a laissez-faire / hands-off policy toward business Democratic Party: opposed to Republican Party Interventionist approach in foreign policy Isolationist approach in foreign policy (Republican Party) Differences from Previous Systems 1.
