Unit 7 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Teaching Plan of Reading A, Unit Seven
Objectives:
Let the Ss learn a simplified version of one funny story in the book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and learn about Tom’s characters.
Encourage the Ss to read more master pieces in English and thus improve their interest in learning English.
Teach the Ss some useful words and expressions.
Teaching procedure:
Warming up
Do a mini survey about reading.
Ask the Ss to read the cartoon on P97, and ask:
Is “Tom Sawyer” a real person?
Who is Tom Sawyer, then?
Show the Ss a cover of the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and tell the Ss that Tom is the leading character of the novel.
Pre-reading
Ask the Ss to look at the heading, the introduction and the picture. Then answer these questions as quickly as possible:
This story comes from a novel. What is the name of the novel?
Who is the writer of the novel?
Was the fence huge or small?
What did Tom get that day?
Which boy in the picture do you you think is Tom Sawyer? What is he doing?
Check the answers.
While-reading
First reading:
Ask the Ss to read the story and answer the following questions:
Where and when did the story take place?
What problem did Tom have?
Did Tom solve the problem at last? If he did, how? (What was his wonderful idea?)
How do you think about Tom?
Second reading: Ask the Ss to read again for more details.
