Background InformationRoss Wetzsteon (1932-1998)Wetzsteon was born in Montana and graduated from Cornell. As writer and theatre editor of the Voice, he wrote many articles on theatre, tennis and changing sexual mores. He was a prominent figure in Off Broadway theatre, having helped create the Obie Awards and served as the chairman and host of the event for 28 years. It is generally played by 2people. Either a fixed number of deals are played or the game is played to a target score with the number of deals or the target score agreed beforehand. The object of the game is to dispose the cards either through melding (i.e. making three or four of your cards of the same suit in a sequence or putting the three or four cards of the same rank together), laying off (i.e. adding one or more of your cards to a melding), or discarding (i.e. putting a card on top of the discard pile at the end of each turn). The game ends when one of the players gets rid of his/her last card. Then, players begin to score by adding up the value of all the cards still remaining in their hands according to the following rules: each of the face cards (K, Q, J) is equal to 10 points, Ace is equal to 1 point and number cards are worth their spot value.
