/Jan09/lunarBasins.html The Crazy Mixed-Up Lunar Crust The lunar surface has 43 large, ancient impact basins that excavated and distributed a large amount of material across the entire Moon, affecting the geochemistry of the crust. /Jan09/lunarBasins.html The Crazy Mixed-Up Lunar Crust Petro and Pieters mapped the horizontal and vertical distribution of well-mixed basin ejecta on a 1x1o global grid, showing contrasting patterns on the nearside versus farside. /Jan09/lunarBasins.html PKT has the highest amount of deeply-mixed basin ejecta FHT and SPAT received smaller amounts of shallowly-mixed ejecta from the 42 (post-SPA) basins Surprisingly, geochemical signatures survived despite all the horizontal and vertical mixing of materials during the basin formation era early in lunar history The Crazy Mixed-Up Lunar Crust The cumulative effects of basin formation directly influenced the observed geochemical terranes, outlined on the map. * Overview: The horizontal and vertical distribution of well-mixed basin ejecta has lunar-wide geochemical ramifications. Abstract: The Moon was pummeled to such a great extent that the materials we see today on the lunar surface are directly related to the materials excavated and ejected from ancient basin-forming events. The degree to which the far-flung ejecta from the Moons largest basins influenced the distribution of observed geochemical terranes is the subject of work by Noah Petro (formerly of Brown University and now at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) and Carle Pieters (Brown University). Using a basin ejecta model, they address two key global issues: (1) the cumulative amount of basin ejecta transported to all areas of the lunar surface and (2) the depths to which the ejecta is mixed into a zone called the early megaregolith. The fact
