Introduction 1.1 Research Background When I was in the high school, what my classmates and I found the most difficult were attributive clauses which is a very important part of English grammar and a good command of attributive clauses almost means high score in examinations. Indeed, of various English subordinate clauses, the attributive clause is perhaps the most complicated and it is one of the most widely investigated structures in second language research. Relative constructions have received attention from linguists throughout the years. In addition, English is syntactically very different from Chinese. The English attributive clause is usually put followed the antecedent, there may be an unlimited words in the form of attributive clause behind the modified word in English., which is called “Right Branching Direction” (RBD) of syntax; while a Chinese sentence allows only a limited amount of words behind the modified word, most of the time, Chinese attributes are put before the head word, which is called “Left Branching Direction” (LBD) of syntax (Zhao Guihua, 2003). Therefore attributive clause has been considered as the symbol of complex English structures and even to some extent, the indicator of mastery of English and attributive clause translation always?presents a hard nut for translator to crack. This thesis explores the methods of translating the relative pronoun “which” in non-restrictive attributive clauses from English to Chinese though a comparative study of some examples in the selected academic papers. The thesis displays three methods of translation on non-restrictive attributive clause: combination, division and transformation.
