Gelb, Principal Dear Committee Members: San Pedro High School, located in the town of San Pedro next to the Port of Los Angeles, has a 100 year history of enduring family roots, extensive community activism, ethnic and economic diversity, and cultural and school pride. Generations of family members attended San Pedro High and many staff are alumni who still live in the community and have their own children enrolled at the high school. Local housing includes million dollar homes, condominiums and apartments, 2 Air Force bases, 2 government housing complexes, and several homeless and court-appointed youth dwellings. Businesses opportunities also vary between blue and white collar, independent and corporately owned, and public and private sectors. The ethnic ratio of San Pedro High School’s 3500 students is 60.1% Hispanic, 24.3% Caucasian (including families of Italian, Croatian, Norwegian, Yugoslav and Greek descent), 10.1% African American, 2.3% Asian, 1.1% American Indian, and .7% Pacific Islander. Family incomes range from over $150,000 to poverty level, with 46.3% of students eligible for federal lunches. The school offers two Magnet programs, Marine Science and Police Academy; it has supported 9th grade Houses each of the last two years; and will launch six Small Learning Communi
