Director of the Hong Kong Observatory Meets with Members of the Sham Shui Po District Council (SSP DC Paper 88/09) Director of the Hong Kong Observatory (DHKO) Dr LEE Boon-ying briefed Members on the relation between the work of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and Sham Shui Po District. Members asked whether the height and density of the proposed buildings above Nam Cheong Station would block the southwesterly wind blowing into the inland area of Sham Shui Po in summer; and whether projected data on the impact of weather conditions such as temperature and wind direction could be provided by HKO to facilitate discussion at district council meetings on land planning in districts. It was also hoped that HKO could collaborate with Sham Shui Po District Council (the Council) and organisations in providing public education and information on global warming. In response, Dr LEE said that the work of HKO was weather forecast and weather monitoring rather than land planning and development. HKO would provide data on weather conditions to departments concerned for planning and design of development projects. In regard to the problems of global warming and climate change, volunteer teams of HKO would organise outreach activities and give talks to organisations and schools on the impact of such problems. The Chairman said that DHKO had clearly explained the functions of HKO. Issues concerning the development project above Nam Cheong Station should be discussed with the Development Bureau. B.
