Syllabus: MAE 4310 Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School
Course Description
Theory and methods for teaching mathematics in the elementary school; contemporary approaches to teaching concepts, number systems, numeration systems, computational algorithms, problem solving, informal geometry, measurement and other topics.

Purpose of the Course
This course is a requirement for the elementary education teacher preparation program. It is designed to provide students with the methodology requisite to effective mathematics teaching in the elementary school classroom. The course centers on using mathematics content knowledge and process skills in the development of effective instructional strategies for the elementary level learner. The primary focus of the course will be to develop pedagogical content knowledge as it relates to elementary mathematics teaching. Experiences such as working with computers; manipulative exploration; calculator usage; problem solving activities; cooperative learning experiences; and discussion of topics related to elementary mathematics all contribute to the development of the professional teacher. The placement of this course in the senior year coincides with the Professional Education Program Delivery Model of the “teacher as empowered person and professional taking action”. During this period of the teacher education sequence, the focus is on the feeling phase of the “empowered person” and the technical skills of the “empowered professional”. It is here that the student becomes more aware of their teaching potentials and further develops problem solving, decision making, technological, communication, perceptual, and valuing skills.
