Khonsari? Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Louisiana State University, 3283 Patrick Taylor Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, USA MARK ARTICLE INFO Keywords: Mechanical degradation EHL line contact Traction coe?cient Consistency reduction ABSTRACT Mechanical degradation of grease in an EHL line contact between two steel rollers is studied. Three successive lubricating phases involving “fully grease covered rollers,” “slippage and grease separation,” and “formation of liquid lubricant reservoirs” are observed and characterized. Traction results are presented for a grease undergoing long-term mechanical degradation process. To gain further insight, a prediction model for assessment of reduction of grease consistency is applied. It is shown that both high shear rate and shear stress cause signi?cant and rapid mechanical degradation within the EHL contact. However, grease tends to accumulate on either side of the contact and forms two “side walls” that tends to block the lubricant from leakage, akin to a soft seal. The edges of the side walls are subjected to much slower degradation rate and are capable of providing lubrication to the contact over a relatively long time. 1. Introduction The study of mechanical/structural degradation of lubricating grease from an energy/entropy point of view has recently gained considerable attention by researchers [1–6]. The reduction in the consistency of a lubricating grease as a result of the physical breakdown of its thickener structure when subjected to high mechanical stress is identi?ed as a measure of mechanical degradation [5]. It causes a gradual increase in the leakage and oil bleeding rate [7] since the broken thickeners structure softens the grease and renders it incapable of f
