Australia and China have agreed on a Work and Holiday Arrangement, under which Australia will grant visas for up to 5,000 Chinese people to work and travel there every year, announced the Australian government on Nov 17. Although Chinese people may not be familiar with the idea of a working holiday, students in western countries have been doing it for years. After finishing high school, many of them choose to have a gap year before going to college, during which they do volunteer work or take a working holiday. They work for short periods to support their travel, and they also broaden their horizons and grow to feel more independent. Although many countries, including the UK and Japan, all have these schemes, Australia is only the second country to open the door for Chinese young people. New Zealand has allowed 1,000 Chinese young people to go on 12-month working holidays there every year since 2010. “The plan will increase demand for tourism services and support the development of Australia’s tourism,” said the announcement. Australia’s working holiday visa allows Chinese holders to stay there for 12 months. You have to be above 18 and under 30 years of age to apply. The visa requires that the main purpose of the visit is traveling and not working, so applicants must have enough funds to support themselves for the first stage of the holiday – about $5,000 (26,600 yuan).
