These include lower-urinary-tract symptoms (LUTS), which may be independent of prostatic enlargement; benign prostatic enlargement (BPE), which indicates objectively demonstrable enlargement of the gland or an enlarged transition zone; bladder-outlet obstruction (BOO), benign prostatic hyperplasia (microscopic/histologic evidence of stromal and epithelial cell hyperplasia of the prostate; and benign prostatic obstruction (BPO), which indicates BOO caused by BPE.
