Abstract
SweetpotatowhiteflyBemisiatabaciGennadius(Homoptera:Aleyrodidae)
isacosmopolitanpestwithworldwidedistributionindiverseecosystems.Its
peststatusisgraduallybecomingaglobalconcern.InSierraLeoneB.tabaciis
graduallybecomingathreattofarmerswhere65%o#theeconomyisfocused
onagriculture.AsB.tabaciisfoundtodevelopresistancetoinsecticidesin
additiontotheadverseeffectstheseinsecticideshaveontheenvironment,
biologicalcontrolisconsideredthemostappropriateapproachtotackleits
pestnature.Thoroughunderstandingofthedevelopmentandreproductionof
B.tabacionitshostplantisafundamentalstepinstrategicpestmanagement
ofB.tabaci.Thisresearchisdesignedtoinvestigatetheeffectsofthreebean
speciessoybeanGlycinemax,gardenbeanPhaseolusvulgaris,andcowpea
Vignaunguiculataonhostpreferenceandsuitability,developmentand
survivorship,age-dependentfecundity,fertilitytableanddemographic
parametersofB.tabacirespectively.
Theinvestigationswereconductedattwoperiods:April-May2002and
November2002-January2003underthesameexperimentalproceduresand
conditionsexceptforphotoperiodconditions.ThephotoperiodsforApril-June
andNovember-Januaryweremaintainedat14h:IOh(L:D)andlOh:14h(L:
D)respectively.Twohundredadultswhiteflycollectedfromastockcolony
raisedoncucumberplantsforseveralgenerationswereaspiratedinabioassay
cagescontainingthethreebeanspecies.Thenumberofadultswhitefly
attractedtoeachspeciesarecountedtodeterminehostpreferenceand
suitabiliyt.Thenumberofeggsovipositedoneachhostspeciesarealso
countedandmonitoreddailytodeterminetheeffectofthesespecieson
developmentandsurvivorship,age-dependentfecundity,life-fertilitytabl
