HIV Testing and Counseling Among Sexually Experienced Teens, 2002 This Presentation Covers Two Areas: Major findings from recent National Campaign publications produced through Putting What Works to Work (PWWTW) - what we know about HIV testing and counseling among sexually experienced teens. This presentation is based on information from the PWWTW publications: Science Says # 18: “HIV Testing Among Sexually Experienced Teens, 1995-2002” and Science Says #19: “HIV Counseling Among Sexually Experienced Teens, 2002” Developed by the National Campaign and available at HIV/AIDS and Teens Approximately one in four of all new HIV infections occur in people under the age of 21. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 14,000 young people aged 13-24 were living with HIV/AIDS in 2003. Through 2003, more than 10,000 young people aged 13-25 had died as a result of AIDS infection. A growing proportion of newly diagnosed HIV cases can be attributed to heterosexual transmission through vaginal intercourse. HIV Testing Among Teens Where Teens Get Tested About one-third of sexually experienced teens who have been tested for HIV received their most recent test at a private doctor’s office/HMO. Approximately another one third were tested at a clinic. The remaining third obtained their test at a school, hospital, or some other place. Why Teens Get Tested The primary reason that sexually experienced teens get tested for HIV is to find out if they are infected. HIV Testing During Pregnancy More than 1 in 4 sexually experienced teen girls who have been tested for HIV report that they were tested because they were pregnant or were receiving prenatal care. Between 1995 and 2002, there was a slight increase in the percentage of sexually experienced teen girls who had an HIV test because they were pregnant or were receiving prenatal care.
