Successful School Improvement Programs in the UK——Cathedral Primary School
The school is a large primary school situated approximately one mile from the city centre in an area with a high degree of social deprivation. The atmosphere of school is very friendly and harmonious. School Characteristics Emphasis on student achievement-level segment. Contingency purposes of teaching: One of the school’s current concerns was how they will be able to keep the staff since many are already being recognised as so good that they were being offered promotions to jobs elsewhere. Emphasizes collaboration with parents: Teachers agreed that the headteacher involved staff, parents and pupils in the decision making process. The teachers described themselves as members of a team. Attention to the relationship with the government: Relationships with the governors were excellent. The schools improvement coordinator had studied the effective schools and school improvement literature extensively. 3. The school’s curriculum coordinators helped staff to organize programs for pupils, and they monitored pupil achievement and the work of the teachers. There are two sides: Advantages: there were advantages to a school being part of the LEA: there was support and encouragement, people were gaining a sense of confidence, and most felt that “this is a place where things are happening.” Disadvantages: the LEA had set itself up as a high profile authority. The pressure was on the schools to produce the results. There was a feeling that there are too many initiatives and that there was a lack of cohesion. The research team felt that all of the LEAs school improvement processes are evident in the school to a greater or lesser extent: Exercise of leadership Practice of management and organization Creation of an environment most suitable for learning practice of teaching and learning Promotion of staff development Promotion of collective review The encouragement of parental and community involvement. 1.
