LORLS: An open source approach to reading/resource list management Gary Brewerton Loughborough University Background: what we had In 1996-99 Loughborough University had limited reading list functionality available as part of our Library Management System Allowed us to “tag” records as being on a reading list Supplier had provided search capability We developed browse capability Requirements: what we wanted Not just a list of bibliographic works! Include academic’s annotations (for a work, group of works or the list in general) Include electronic and other material not held by the Library Structured as paper-based reading list Allow academics to maintain their own reading lists but alert Library staff to changes History: what we did February 1999 University forms project to investigate online reading lists March 2000 Library Systems team start development of system June 2000 Initial development of system completed October 2000 System goes live at Loughborough University History: sharing it with others June 2002 Gave The University of Nottingham the software December 2002 Simplified software installation process General release of the software under GPL November 2003 Wrote article about the project Named the system LORLS (Loughborough Online Reading List System) Student’s view Creating a reading list Adding an item Adding a note Managing a reading list Key features Web-based system with simple HTML Z39.50 interrogation of remote database for bibliographic details Allows deep linking to Library catalogue Can generate OpenURLs Allows export of bibliographic details from a reading lists in tagged format Range of reports available to Library staff What next?
