Discontinuation or Continuation: History, Design, Theory and the Debates of “National Form” inArchitecture Journal in the 1980s ABSTRACT This paper reviews the articles published on Architectural Journal during the 1980s on the discourse and architectural designs of “national forms”, revealing the construction of “Chinese architectural tradition” through historical knowledge, architectural practice and theoretical discourses. It explicates that the interrelations of three fields, i.e. architectural history, design and theory, were demonstrated in the debates of “national forms” dominated by architects in the 1980s, with profound influence after the 1980s.
