After emigrated to the United States Viterbi attended the Boston Latin School, and then studied electrical engineering at MIT in 1952. He got both double degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1957 and then start working at a Laboratory in Pasadena.There he started researching the telemetry for guided missiles and also developing the phase-locked loop. It is still used widely in cellular phones for error correcting codes, as well as for speech recognition, DNA analysis, and many other applications of Hidden Markov models.However, Viterbi did not patent the Algrithm but to share and do futher research.
