Introduction 1.1 Purpose and significance of the thesis: Cooperative learning is an teaching approach which organizes classroom activities by dividing students into small heterogeneous groups to work together to accomplish the shared goals (Wang 5). It aims at improving students’ ability of cooperation and communication. As an effective teaching approach, cooperative learning has been paid great attention in English teaching home and abroad. Since 2003, New Senior English for China (NSEC) has been widely used in China. It is the product of the new round of National Curriculum Reform for Basic Education and focus on students’ ability of comprehensive language application . A unit of NSEC can be divided into 8 parts, warming-up, pre-reading, reading, comprehending, learning about language, using language, summing up and learning tips. As the first teaching section, warming-up can help students activate prior knowledge, motivate interest and prepare for later study of the unit. So how to teach warming-up section well become more and more important . Since cooperative learning has been widely used in English teaching, such as speaking, listening, reading, writing etc., why not use it in NSEC warming-up section teaching? In this thesis, the author connects cooperative learning with warming-up teaching. The purposes of this study are to identify cooperative learning approach in English teaching, to emphasize the important functions of warming-up teaching, to find out the effectiveness of cooperative learning used in warming-up teaching, to think about the problems in the present situation o
