* Nearly every graduate program requires applicants to submit letters of recommendation. Often applicants must provide three or more letters. Dont underestimate the importance of these letters. While your transcript, standardized test scores, and personal statement are vital components to your application, an excellent letter of recommendation can make up for weaknesses in any of these areas. The best letters of recommendation come from professors or individuals who know you well. A letter of recommendation discusses applicants personal qualities, accomplishments, and experiences that make him/her unique and perfect for the programs to which he/she is applying. A brief letter with phrases like good student and hard worker that arent substantiated with examples will get tossed aside in favor of the detailed letter that doesnt just tell but shows how qualified the student is. Letters of recommendation provides a valuable record of the candidates previous experience and can testify to his or her skills and abilities. An effective letter of recommendation: ● verifies experience ● confirms competence ● builds credibility ● bolsters confidence Letters of recommendation may be written in a classic format that includes an introduction, body, and conclusion. There may also be specific requirements for certain letters that you may need to follow. In most cases, however, any well-organized format will be acceptable. Look at the following sample format: Introduction 1 paragraph of a couple sentences Sentence 1-- State the purpose of the letter, namely that youre writing a recommendation concerning the applicant. It is a pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Mr. Doe. Sentence 2 -- Explain how you know the applicant.? State from where and for how long youve known him or her.? Be very clear about the working relationship involved.? That is, explain whether he or she was your subordinate, co-worker, student, etc. I was able to get to know Mr. Doe because he
