The Sketch Book（1819-1820 ） It includes two famous works “ Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. It became the first work by an American writer to win financial success on both sides of the Atlantic. It gives Irving international recognition and success. “Rip Van Winkle”means either a person who sleeps for a long period of time, or one who is inexplicably(费解的) ( perhaps even blissfully ) unaware of current events. The story of Rip Van Winkle begins about five or six years before the American Revolution when under the Dutch colonization and ends twenty years later. A kindhearted farmer Rip Van Winkle who helped a strang distribute wine on a mountain slope. He drank a little and soon fell asleep. When he woke and went back to the village, it was 20 years later. Everything had changed. The most important change was the War of Independence had been won and the portrait(肖像) of King George of Britain was replaced by American President George Washington. Literary reputation In 1999, the Hollywood master of suspense , Tim Burton adapted The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow for a movie named Sleepy Hollow （断头谷）.Both in dramatic circumstances and a sense of humor ,it pushed Irvings original novel to a new height .
