The forces that brought about the modern development of Europe the development of capitalism the Renaissance the Religious Reformation Martin Luther Direct communication with God All believers are priests “the individual is as alone before the almighty as a man facing the evening sky ---- nothing can stand between him and god . The Christian man must examine and judge for himself. ” John Calvin God has the absolute control over human kind Ceaseless work is a sign of salvation III. Four colonial patterns The first English permanent settlement: 1607 in Virginia, organized by the London Company The settlers elected their delegates and set up the House of Burgesses, and at the same time they bought and enslaved black servants. These two events greatly influenced the political and social development of the US later. 2. Puritan New England The second enduring English settlement was established in Massachusetts Bay in 1620 by English puritans. The American values such as individualism, hard work, respect of education, the sense of mission, intolerant moralism owe very much to the Puritan beliefs. 3. Catholic Maryland Maryland was founded by the Catholics. The founder was the second Lord Baltimore.
