ABSTRACT
(Received in USA 16 May 1996; accepted 25 August 1996)
Pe(II1) / CrIII) hydroxide, a waste byproduct obtained
fro5 the treatrent of Cr(V1) containing wastewaters in a
fertilieer industry, has been used for the adsorption of I(11)
fro5 aqueous solution. The influence of various parameters such
as retal ion concentration ( 10 - 48 sg/L), agitation tire (1 -
160 sin), adsorbent dosage (5 -258 sg per 50 511, tesperature (24
- 44 C) and pH value (4 - 10) on the reroval of Hg(I1) has been
studied. The adsorption follone both Laugsuir and Freundlich
isotherr rodels. The applicability of the Lsgergren kinetic rode1
has been investigated. Alrost quantitative reroval of Hg(I1) fro5
a solution containing 48 sg/L in a 563 rl solution by 175 sg of
adsorbent occurred at au initial pH of 5.0. Adsorption was
uniforraly high (91 X) in the initial pH range 4.0 to 1B.H.
Tesperature studies showed that the adsorption process was
endotherric in nature. Desorption of Hg(II) showed that it is
aolubilieed in 2 X KI to the extent of 65 X.
