Abstract ?There are abundant English idioms, which always hard to be understood literally. Some of them originated from classical works, such as Bible stories, Shakespeares works and Fables of Aesop, the others from history, social customs and so on. They embrace every aspect of social life and regarded as the quintessence of English language for their vivid, witty and concise character. The translation of both Chinese and English “idioms” is very difficult and always considered as a painstaking task. Idioms often appear in English literature, political and technical thesis. The translating of idioms reflects crucially on the whole translation. Thus, we must study them and the translating methods seriously. Here, in my thesis the discussion about the characters and origin of English idioms occupies a large space. Considering it is likely that only the overall comprehension will make it easier to study and translate English idioms. And the origin is an important element because the research of the origins of English idioms offers us a chance to be acquainted with western social culture, religion, history and customs. ?Finally, I will make a conclusion with some suggestions to the practical translating.
