The Indians lived on the land by hunting, gathering, fishing and farming. American Westerns : brave, skilled on horseback, and hunting wild animals. Some tribes of the Indians to the south of the Rio Grande River developed their culture to an advanced stage and created Maya civilization. The Maya civilization site After the decline of Maya civilization, the Toltec built their empire in the central valley of Mexico during the 10th century. In the middle of the 12th, the Toltec empire was destroyed by invaders from the north. Aztec civilization: the Aztec built great cities and developed a complex social, political and religious structure. It remained an important influence on the development of Mexican culture. Discovery of the New world En epoch-making event: In the late 15th century, Christopher Columbus, an Italian navigator, was supported by the Spanish queen. He lead his men to sail across the vast ocean in 1492 and reached some small islands in the now West Indies. He thought he had reached Asia and did not know he had discovered a New Continent. Another navigator, Amerigo Vespucius, proved that the land was not India, but a new continent. Therefore, the land was named America after him. Christopher Columbus（1451-1506） Founding of Colonies Not all the 13 English colonies in North American were established in the same pattern. They were usually divided into three kinds: crown colonies, proprietary colonies, and charter colonies. Between 1607 and 1733 the British established 13 colonies along the east coast of North America. -----The first successful English colony in America was founded at Jamestown in Virginia, in 1607. -----
