Andes: A Coached Learning Environment for Classical Newtonian Physics1 K. G. Schulze, R. N. Shelby, D. J. Treacy, M. C. Wintersgill United States Naval Academy Annapolis, MD 21402 schulze@usna.edu Abstract Andes is a coached, intelligent tutor for classical Newtonian physics. It provides the student with a learning environment in which to solve physics problems in several areas found in a traditional Physics I course. The system encourages the student to draw free body diagrams and enter the equations necessary to solve the problem. It provides immediate feedback to the student and allows the student to ask for hints, both in terms of what he has done incorrectly as well as when he has reached an impasse and does not know how to proceed. Andes has been used with a limited number of students at the United States Naval Academy with statistically significant results. 1. Introduction Andes is an intelligent tutor for classical Newtonian physics that is being developed by a team of researchers at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh and researchers at the United States Naval Academy. This paper describes the Andes system. Physics homework has traditionally been very time consuming and frustrating for students. Unsupported homework may even be a source of many of the incorrect algebraic, symbol-pushing habits that are so widespread and harmful (Halloun and Hestenes, 95; Larkin, 83). Consequently, one of the early goals of Andes was to provide a robust environment that would help a student solve homework problems without the aid of a human teacher. In addition to possibly reducing the negative effects just cited, it was also felt the use of Andes would provide more classroom time for demonstrations and coverage of conceptual issues. The Naval Academy is an excellent test bed for the system because all students are required to take two semesters of calculus-based physics in their sophomore year. Approximately 36% of these stud
