Inter Winding Short Circuit Faults in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors used for High Performance Applications. Rakib Islam Mohammad Islam Joanne Tersigni Tomy Sebastian* Senior Member IEEE Senior Member IEEE Fellow IEEE Nexteer Automotive Saginaw, MI 48601, USA *E-mail: tomy.sebastian@ Abstract- This paper examines the effect of all possible sta- tor winding short circuit conditions on the performances of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) used in high performance applications like aerospace, automo- tive, medical and military. The study identified stator fault due to insulation failure and categorized them into turn-to-turn, phase-to-neutral, phase-to-phase and all phase’s short circuit conditions. Two types of winding configuration are considered to address the transient tor- que capabilities of a particular PMSM design. The tran- sient behavior of the short-circuited motor drive is cha- racterized analytically with a simple circuit model. The analytical model is then verified using 2D finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, few scenarios of the fault condi- tions are created in a real motor to validate the analysis. Also, the severity assessment of such faults is extended towards two different kind of winding arrangement com- monly used for PMSMs. Index Terms-DIN standard, insulation void, short circuit, turn-to-turn fault, torque loss, braking torque. I. INTRODUCTION Permanent magnet synchronous motors are becoming popular in applications requiring high performance and high reliability. High performance motor drive applications require the ability to produce smooth and linear torque with current. High reliability motor drive on the other hand requires precise torque control and the ability to detect and continue
