Surface immobilization of perfluorinated acrylate copolymers by self-crosslinking Yang Tingting a, Peng Hui a, Cheng Shiyuan a,*, In Jun Park b a School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Hubei University, Wuhan 430062, China bDepartment of Chemistry Engineering, Korea Research Institute of Chemistry, Technology, Taejon 305-606, South Korea Received 25 July 2005; received in revised form 9 September 2005; accepted 9 September 2005 Available online 2 November 2005 Abstract Perfluorinated acrylate copolymers with methyl methacrylate (MMA), n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) and sodium 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propa- nesulfonate (AMPSNa) as comonomers were successfully prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization, using vinyltriethoxysilane as a crosslinking agent. The structure and surface morphologies of this self-crosslinking copolymer were characterized by FT-IR, NMR, DSC, TGA, and AFM, respectively. Further studies were directed at determining the influence of crosslinking on the physical properties of perfluorinated acrylate copolymers. It was found that the properties of anti-water and anti-solvent, as well as values of contact angle for water/oil, were improved with increasing extend of crosslinking, achieving to alleviate contact angle hysteresis. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. Introduction Fluorinatedorpartiallyfluorinatedpolymershavebeenwidely studied in recent years as useful materials in the field of biomaterials [1] and coatings for textiles [2], leather [3] and stone [4] due to their unique surface property. For example, these polymers have the unique characteristics of thermal and ph- otochemical stability, water and oil repellency, and self-cleaning property. Especially the acrylate polymers containing perfluor- oalkyl side chains have been the focus of number of studies because of the good reactivity of
