A selectiveapproach to regression testing selects tests for a modi- ed program from an existing test suite. We present anew technique for selective regression testing. Our al-gorithm constructs control dependence graphs for pro-gram versions, and uses these graphs to determinewhich tests from the existing test suite may exhibitchanged behavior on the new version. Unlike mostprevious techniques for selective retest, our algorithmselects every test from the original test suite thatmight expose errors in the modi ed program, and doesthis without prior knowledge of program modi cations.Our algorithm handles all language constructs andprogram modi cations, and is easily automated.1 IntroductionIt has been estimated that software maintenanceactivities account for as much as two-thirds of theoverall cost of software production[18]. One costly butnecessary maintenance activity is regression testing,which is performed on modi ed programs to providecon dence that modi cations are correct and have notadversely a ected other portions of the program. Animportant di erence between regression testing anddevelopment testing is that during regression testingwe usually have an established suite of tests availablefor reuse. One regression testing strategy reruns allsuch tests, but this retest all approach may consumeinordinate time and resources. An alternative, selec-tive retest, chooses the tests from the old test suitethat are deemed necessary to test the modi ed pro-gram.
