George Gordon Byron (1788 –1824) ???Byron was born in 1788 in London and died of fever in 1824 in Greece. He was a British poet and a leading figure in the Romantic movement. Among Byrons best-known works are the brief poems She Walks in Beauty and When We Two Parted, in addition to the narrative poem Don Juan. He is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential. Byrons Position in English History --Influenced the Chartist Poets in England and the progressive poets in many other countries; --Immense influence on European poetry, music, novel, opera, and painting. --The most outstanding representative of English Romanticism; --One of the most influential poets of his time; Major Literary Works Hours of Idleness (1807): his first volume of poems English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809): a vigorous onslaught upon his critic Manfred (1817): a Faustian poetic drama reflecting his sense of guilt, remorse and frustration Childe Harolds Pilgrimage (1818): one of his most important works; autobiographical work Cain (1821): a poetical drama Don Juan (1818-1823): his satiric masterpiece What is Byronic hero? As a leading Romanticist, Byrons chief contribution is his creation of the Byronic hero, a proud, mysterious rebel figure of noble origin. With immense superiority in his passions and powers, this Byronic hero would carry on his shoulders the burden of righting all the wrongs in a corrupt world, and would rise single-handedly against any kind of tyrannical rules either in government, in religion, or in moral principles with unconquerable wills and inexhaustible energies. --The figure is, to some extent, modeled on the life and personality of Byron himself, and makes Byron famous both at home and abroad. --Such a hero appears first in Childe Harolds Pilgrimage, and then further developed in later works such as the Oriented Tales, Manfred, and Don Juan in different guises.
