So far it is difficult to define postmodernism temporally or historically as when postmodernism exactly initiates is unclear. Some see it as simply the continuation and development of the modernist; some others have seen in postmodern art a radical break with classical modernism, while others again view past literature and culture retrospectively through postmodern eyes, identifying texts and author as ‘already’ postmodern. As a literary term, postmodernism was first used in 1934 by a Spanish writer Federico De Onis and used again in 1942 by the editor of Selected Poems of Latin America. They pointed that postmodernism is the new tendencies in modernism. Nowadays, postmodernism has become a prevailing leading concept in contemporary western and eastern culture and therefore exerted profound influence on contemporary culture and ideology. Nevertheless, since the concept is generally broad, it is not yet strictly defined. Many postmodern writers try to experiment with some innovative narrative techniques, which are farther different from the traditional ones, to reflect their ideas on reality. Joseph Heller, in the Catch-22, successfully illustrates the postmodernist features.
