教材背景链接;Carnival involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, masquerade2 and public street party. People often dress up during the celebrations, which marks an overturning of daily life.;Traditionally，carnival marked the last opportunity to celebrate and to use up special foods before Lent. The Lenten period of the Church calendar was six weeks directly before Easter. During Lent, no parties or other celebrations were held, and people were banned from eating rich food. ;In the days before Lent, all rich food and drink had to be got rid of. The consumption(消费)of this, in a big party that involved the whole country is thought to be the origin of carnival.;While it forms a necessary part of the Christian calendar, particularly in Catholic3 regions, some carnival traditions may date back to pre-Christian times. Many local carnival customs are based on local pre-Christian rituals(仪式)．;Some of the most well-known traditions, including carnival parades and masquerades, were first recorded in medieval(中世纪的)Italy. The carnival of Venice was for a long time the most famous carnival. From Italy, carnival traditions spread to the Catholic nations of Spain and France. From France, they spread to Germany, and to New France in North America. From Spain, they spread to the Caribbean and Latin America.;Other areas have developed their own traditions. The Carnival of Binche is being celebrated along the east coast of Australia, where the traditional foods are carrots and apples.
