Language Testing;Requirement of the course;Preface (前言);Chapter 1 What is a language test?;The need to use language testing. The functions of tests: 1) the educational functions. eg. to measure the learner’s aptitude or natural abilities to learn languages (aptitude test学习潜能测试); to discover what the testee already knows about the target language (proficiency test水平测试); to assess how much a learner has master the contents of a particular course (achievement test成绩测试); to discover mainly what the testee does not know about the language (diagnostic test诊断测试). 2) the researching functions. eg. language acquisition, language processing, the nature of language proficiency. ;Types of test ;According to the test forms: Direct test vs. indirect test (直接/间接测试) Direct test: an approach to testing which emphasizes the need for close simulation of the criterion in the test. In the testing of speaking, the Oral Proficiency Interview is a direct testing technique. If we want to test the writing ability of a student, we ask him to finish some multiple items. This is an indirect test. ;According to the language measuring forms (测试的形式): Discrete point test vs. integrative test (分离式/散点式考试 vs综合式考试) Discrete point test: one item will be used to test only one point of knowledge. eg. multiple choice. integrative test: one item will be used to test more than one points of knowledge. eg. dictation, cloze, composition, reading, oral teseting. According to the scoring methods: Objective test (客观测试) vs. Subjective test (主观测试) Objective test needs no judgment of the raters. There is usually no bias of the raters. eg. multiple choice, true or false questions, matching, spelling testing, blank filling, short answer question. Subjective test needs the judgment of the raters. eg. writing, dictation, essay question;According to the explanation of the scores: norm-referenced tests(常模参照性考试) vs. criterion-referenced tests(尺度参照性考试). norm-referenced tests(常模参照性考试): it is an approach to measureme
