ENHANCED DETERMINISTIC DESIGN: APPLICATION TO A MICRO CNC MACHINE DESIGN
ABSTRACT
This paper introduces an enhanced deterministic design
approach for the design of a micro mechanical system with
the objective to achieve better accuracy through
miniaturisation. The methodology of design encompasses
optimisation using Taguchi technique, finite element
modelling, and, added functions considering a number of
micro physical problems that may characterise the micro
mechanical system. Typical micro physical problems of a
micro milling machine were enumerated with possibilities to
include some of them within the overall methodology was
observed. Micro physical effects may not all have a known
model. An objective function was created to satisfy part of
the specifications. An example of a vertical column of the
micro mill was designed and evaluated within the concept of
the proposed design methodology. Initial results and error
assessment measured on the micro machine are presented.
Keyword: Deterministic design, Tapered Egg Bridge,

INTRODUCTION
The actual production of micro-parts is performed by
standard machine tools consuming high energy, occupying
large space and requiring large air-conditioned
environments; therefore it is important to save driving
energy, space and resources in controlling the surroundings
(e.g. temperature, humidity) by applying the concept of
micro-factory and robust design of micro-machines. Various
approaches to design mechanical systems are established and
could be summarised as creative concept followed by
deterministic modelling[1, 2], axiomatic design[3], robust
design known as Taguchi method[4], customer centred
product[5], and, systematic design [6, 7]. The aspects of
virtual design could also be introduced to ease the design
process with less or no prototypes to check for performance
and economic reasons.
