Thispaperisconcernedwiththechallengeofallowingstatisticalanalysisofcon?dential businessdatawhilemaintainingcon?dentiality.Themostwidely-usedapproachtodateisstatistical disclosurecontrol, whichinvolvesmodifyingorcon?dentialisingdatabeforereleasingittousers. Newerproposedapproachesincludethereleaseofmultiplyimputedsyntheticdatainplaceofthe originaldata,andtheuseofaremoteanalysissystemenablinguserstosubmitstatisticalqueriesand receiveoutputwithoutdirectaccesstodata. Mostimplementationsofstatisticaldisclosurecontrol methodstodateinvolvecensusorsurveymicrodataonindividualpersons,becauseexistingmethods aregenerallyacknowledgedtoprovideinadequatecon?dentialityprotectiontobusiness(orenter- prise)data. Inthispaperweseektocomparethestatisticaldisclosurecontrolapproachwiththeremoteanaly- sisapproach,inthecontextofprotectingthecon?dentialityofbusinessdatainstatisticalanalysis. Weprovideanexamplewhichenablesaside-by-sidecomparisonoftheoutputsofexploratorydata analysisandlinearregressionanalysisconductedonasamplebusinessdatasetunderthesetwoap- proaches,andprovidetraditionaluncon?dentialisedresultsasastandardforcomparison.Thereare certainlyadvantagesanddisadvantagesintheremoteanalysisapproachanditisunlikelythatremote analysiswillreplacestatisticaldisclosurecontrolmethodsinallapplications.Ifthedisadvantagesare judgedtooseriousinagivensituation,theanalystmayhavetoseekaccesstotheuncon?dentialised dataset.
