Methods:Wecompletedaretrospectiveanalysisof377patientsaftertheirradicalgastrectomieswereperformed inourdepartmentbetween2005and2009.Twogroupsofpatientswerestudied:theSURGgroupreceived surgicaltreatmentimmediatelyafterdiagnosis;theNACTunderwentsurgeryafter2-6cyclesofneoadjuvant chemotherapy. Results:Therewere267patientsintheSURGgroupand110patientsintheNACTgroup.TheNACTgrouphad moreproximaltumours(P=0.000),moretotal/proximalgastrectomies(P=0.000)andlongeroperativetime(P= 0.005)thantheSURGgroup.Morbiditywas10.0%intheNACTpatientsand17.2%intheSURGpatients(P= 0.075).Thereweretwocasesofpostoperativedeath,bothintheSURGgroup(P=1.000).Nochangesin complicationsormortalityratewereobservedbetweentheSURGandNACTgroups. Conclusion:TheFOLFOX7neoadjuvantchemotherapyisnotassociatedwithincreasedpostoperativemorbidity, indicatingthattheFOLFOX7neoadjuvantchemotherapyisasafechoiceforthetreatmentoflocaladvanced gastriccancer.
