Shaping a written argument – two strategies There are many ways to shape an academic argument. You will learn two ways in this section. Strategy 1 The first strategy of organizing an argument requires the writer to present arguments in an objective manner. This is done by stating, in the introduction and the body of the paper, the various facts and opinions about the issue found in academic sources such as journals and scholarly books. Read the paper below (on whether computers should be used in the classroom) and write brief notes about the purpose and main points of each paragraph in the right hand margin. Follow the example. Discuss the use of computers in the classroom (Term Paper 1) In the past few years, the Government has been encouraging the use of computers in teaching and learning and has spent millions of dollars on purchasing both hardware and software for schools. Whether this move is educationally sound has been much debated. While some welcome new facilities that provide an alternative learning platform, others doubt the pedagogical values of using computers in lessons. In this paper, I will examine arguments that support the use of computers in the classroom and those which maintain that such use is problematic. I will then conclude by presenting my own opinion on the topic.
