TERMS OF REFERANCE for Comprehensive Baseline Survey of Indrawati Sub Basin Background Koshi River Basin is one of the three major river basins of Nepal feeding the Ganges river basin in India. It was estimated that only 45.6 percent of total area of the basin (i.e. 27,533 sq.km.) is located within Nepal, whereas remaining 54.4 percent (32,847 sq.km.) is located in Tibet Autonomous Region of China (WECS 1999). The Basin within Nepal extends from the Himalayas, including southern slope of Mount Everest, to the Nepal-India border, covering seventeen districts of Eastern and Central Development Regions. Indrawati Sub Basin The Indrawati Sub Basin, one of the major sub basins of Koshi River Basin, is located in the mid-hill of the central region of Nepal, in the Bagmati zone, which originates from the higher snowy range of the Himalayas and joins downstream with Sun koshi (at 626 m msl). This basin consists of 3 districts, Sindhupalchok, Kathmandu and Kavre. Considering river basin as a single unit, this project focuses on those areas falling within this basin. The length of the main course of the Indrawati river is about 59 km, covering 124,000 hectares of land. Some of the major tributaries of the Indrawati river basin are Larke khola (khola is the local term for river), Yangri khola, Melamchi khola, Jhyangri khola, Chaa khola, Handi khola and Mahadev khola. The landscape in the basin mostly covers rugged mountains, with occasional plateaus where farming is done. Agriculture and forest, including fishing and animal husbandry form the primary resource base of people’s livelihoods. According to the district profile, almost 60% of the people depend on agriculture in this district. The rivers upstream originate from Langtang National Park and its Buffer Zone (LNPBZ).
